The town of Terrebonne Oregon is located minutes north of Bend and Redmond Oregon. Barely a blip on the map, this area still deserves special attention.
Take the time to explore its rugged scenery and you’ll realize that Terrebonne is a not-so-secret gem for those who enjoy outdoor activities and magnificent views.

And whether you’re interested in buying a ranch, horse property, or simply a home with room enough to breathe, Terrebonne would be the perfect place for you.
Terrebonne History and Landmarks
Located in Central Oregon’s high desert, Terrebonne was originally named Hillman after James J. Hill and E.H. Harriman two railroad magnates who competed over who would be the first to complete a railway to Bend.
However, when a local business man named Hillman fell into disrepute the town voted to rename the city “Terrebonne” or Good Earth.

The most noted landmark in Terrebonne is Smith Rock. You can’t help but notice this unique natural rock outcrop from miles away, especially in the late afternoon sunlight when it absolutely glows.
Its sheer tuff and basalt cliffs are an internationally known haven for rock climbing and sport climbing as well as hiking and mountain biking. At its base, the Crooked River meanders on its way through Smith Rock State Park.
Smith Rock has even been featured in numerous movies including “The Postman”, “Swordfish” and many classic westerns including John Wayne and Katherine Hepburn’s “Rooster Cogburn”.
Terrebonne Homes
There’s a combination of both irrigated farmland and sage-covered natural areas throughout Terrebonne. Some of the most unique view properties in Central Oregon can be found here, in an area that feels like you’re getting away from it all without actually being too far away.

One home currently for sale in Terrebonne is nestled right on the edge of Smith Rock State Park. Built in 2003, the house is 2432 square feet with 4.31 acres and a breathtaking view of the surrounding countryside.

Plus, with 1.5 acres of fenced irrigated pasture for horses, whoever is lucky enough to buy this home can ride out their back gate right into Smith Rock State Park.
